Am I commiting animal cruelty?
I have a red eared slider who was a hatchling when a bought it, and I had it for 5 years. His shell is only 3-4 inches and he is kept in a 9 gallon tank with a turtle dock, a 60 watt desk lamp, and water which covers about 4 inches. I know how to take care of him but my parents keep thinking that he was already 50 years old when we bought him and he won't grow anymore, so this tank is sufficient. I know he is not 50 at all he is only 6 years old but he is severly stunted. He should be larger by now but he hardly grows. We feed him shrimp, krill, and pellets. I keep telling my parents the proper way to feed him, how to take care of him, and all the supplies, but they never seem to pay attention. I ask my mom and she says "Okay, okay, we'll give him a good habitat by January." I ask my dad and he says "It's okay, he's in a good habitat. Look how happy is swimming and playing in the water." I know I'm not taking care of him properly. I had $400 in my allowance but we recently moved and now it dissapeared so I can't buy him what he needs to thrive. Am I commiting animal cruelty? I'm only in grade 6.
