Going skiing/snowboarding...what clothes shall I take?

My boyfriend loves snowboarding so I am taking him to the snowy mountains for his birthday. I have never been on snow before, but because this is a surprise I can't ask him what we need to take but instead I have to have it prepared. I am hiring a jacket and pants...common sense tells me to take warm clothes but is there anything else I need to think about...even if it isn't necessarily clothing?
