Mary Shelleys 'Frankenstein', letters from R. Walton?

At the start of the novel there are a series of letters from R. Walton to his sister. They are quite long. I started reading one and find it hard to read and boring. Are the letters important to the story? Is there any key points they reveal? Can I skip them and read them later if I want? Its for my holiday homework.
