What causes ice to crackle when water is poured over it?

Water is at a higher temperature than ice and thus induces heat transfer which imparts an internal strain leading to fracturing within the ice due to thermal expansion. The crackle is a form of acoustic energy released during this process. Strain = (Coefficient of thermal expansion) * (T2 - T1). Cheers
