Why does my 6 disc cd player have no volume control?

My 2003 Ford Escape XLT came with a AM/FM stereo with tape player. I bought a factory 6 disc cd changer for it. After it was installed, not by a professional, the volume control doesn't work. It is at one level all the time and won't turn up or down. Is it the player? Or could it be installed wrong?
